Maynard Police Department Investigating Bomb Threat

Threat Believed to be a Hoax

MAYNARD — Lt. Michael A. Noble reports that the Maynard Police Department is working with state and federal authorities to investigate a bomb threat that is believed to be a hoax.

Maynard Police received a call shortly before 6 p.m. Monday from a town resident who found a quantity of shotgun shells in a bag on the sidewalk in front of her house. Various messages were scribbled on the shells themselves, making references to terrorism and a bomb planted on a bus in town.

Maynard Police notified the Massachusetts State Police Fusion Center and federal authorities, as well as the Town Administrator’s office, School Department, and school bus contractor. The vicinity and all four of the town’s school buses were thoroughly searched by Maynard Police and the State Police Bomb Squad, and no danger was found. State Police took custody of the shotgun shells

“While we believe this incident is most likely a hoax, we are taking it very seriously and conducting a thorough investigation, utilizing all of the resources at our disposal,” Lt. Noble said. “We will prosecute those responsible.”

Maynard Police note that, even if a hoax is ascertained, this incident falls under MGL c 269 s 14 “Terroristic Threats,” violation of which is a felony carrying up to 20 years in prison.

Out of an abundance of caution, Maynard Police will have extra units monitoring the Maynard Public Schools on Tuesday.

This incident is being actively investigated by the Maynard Police Department. Anyone with information is strongly urged to call 978-897-1011 or 978-897-1012 or they may dial the department’s anonymous Tip line: 978-897-0563

Chief Mark W. Dubois is currently out of the state on United States Army Reserve duties.
