MAYNARD — Chief Christopher Troiano is pleased to report that the Maynard Police Department has promoted Sgt. Michael Sutherland to Deputy Chief and Officer Christopher Wellborn to Sergeant.
The Select Board approved both promotions on Tuesday night. Deputy Chief Sutherland and Sgt. Wellborn began their new roles on Wednesday, April 2.
The Deputy Chief position became open when Chief Troiano succeeded now-retired Chief Michael Noble. Sutherland’s promotion created the vacant Sergeant’s position.
Deputy Chief Sutherland is a former U.S. Army sergeant who joined the Maynard Police Department in 2014, after retiring from an Army career that included two combat deployments as a Calvary Scout.
In his time with Maynard Police, Deputy Chief Sutherland served as a Patrol Officer, and was promoted to Sergeant in 2019. As a shift supervisor and Patrol Sergeant, Deputy Chief Sutherland assisted with training of new employees, administrative duties, and served as the department’s Assistant Accreditation Manager.
Deputy Chief Sutherland has a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from UMass Lowell, and a Master’s degree in Counterterrorism from Nichols College. His professional training includes completing the FBI-LEEDA Leadership Trilogy, and Drug Recognition Expert certification. Deputy Chief Sutherland is also an assessor for the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission.
“Beyond his training and education, Michael Sutherland has proven himself as an effective leader within the department,” said Chief Troiano. “He is highly respected by his peers, subordinates, and supervisors alike. His ability to motivate through transformational leadership, his strategic thinking, and his unwavering dedication to the department and the community make him the ideal choice for Deputy Chief.”
Sgt. Wellborn has been with the Maynard Police Department since 2021 and worked previously for the Cambridge and Emerson College Police Departments.
Sgt. Wellborn has completed Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC) Criminal Investigation Training, the Team Training Associates Professional Development Workshop, and graduated from the New England Public Safety Leadership Academy at Nichols College.
Sgt. Wellborn earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from UMass Boston.
“For the past year, Christopher Wellborn has served as an Officer in Charge, where he has consistently demonstrated strong leadership, sound decision-making, and the ability to effectively supervise his peers,” said Chief Troiano. “His dedication to the Department and the community makes him an outstanding candidate for this well-earned promotion.”
